In addition, the maximum unprotected capacitance (Ci ) and inductance (Li ) of the intrinsically safe apparatus, including interconnecting wiring, must be less than or equal to the capacitance (Ca ) and inductance (La ) which can be safely connected to the associated apparatus. Field wiring has distributed capacitance and inductance capable of releasing energy. 

Because IS requirements are concerned with the amount of energy that can be released from circuits in a hazardous area, the stored energy in the distributed inductance and capacitance of the cable must be considered in determining the length of the field wiring. If these criteria are met, then the combination may be connected and remain intrinsically safe. The following table summarizes the maximum values that are permissible for the given RIOM-H component field circuits.
